So what did we do today to entertain ourselves?

We actually played indoor baseball using a dry water ball and a small souvenir bat. The garage door was 1st base, the couch was 2nd and the love seat was 3rd. The big old chair in the corner was home. The only rule was don’t break anything.

The boys and I had a great time….and nothing was broken.

Using a little imagination can help create a fun day when the kids can not go outside to play.

Swing into Action -  Start the obstacle course with your kids swinging as high as they can. Then let them jump out of the swing and into the air. Measure how far they are able to “fly.” Give them 3 times to improve their distance. Record it on a piece of paper.

Pirate Plank - Next lay a long 2 x 2 on the ground  and have them walk the “pirate plank.” Try different variations of walking the plank. Some ideas are blink folded or hopping on one foot. See if they can complete the task without falling off. Record their results.

Tornado Toss – Place 3 to 5 buckets or mixing bowls in a vertical line spacing them appropriately depending on your kids’ ages. Then give your kids mini bean bags to toss into the buckets. See how many they can make. Record their results.

Target Practice - Place 3 to 5 empty plastic milk cartons on your fence or deck.  Have your kids try to “shoot” the plastic milk carton off the fence or deck using a water hose. Time them to see how long it takes. Give them 3 rounds to improve their score.

 Bike Racing – Lastly place soccer practice cones on your driveway in a vertical line. Next have your kids drive their bikes around the cones in a zig zag fashion. Time how long it takes them to complete the racing course. Let them do this 3 times to see if they can beat their old time. Record the results.

Award Ceremony – Create an award your kids would like. It can be something to eat; a snack or treat they really enjoy like an ice cream cone or a homemade chocolate shake. Or create a blue ribbon or certificate on your computer. Hold an “official” award ceremony praising them for their accomplishments.

The Backyard Obstacle Course is always one of my kids favorite Mommy Day Camp activity. They ask for it  every year.
